What is Gluten?

A protein that is found in common cereals including wheat, barley, rye and some cross breeds.


What is Gluten Sensitivity?

Where a person feels discomfort from eating gluten containing products and involves the inflammation of the small intestine before eventual degeneration. This commonly leads to Celiac disease.


What is Celiac Disease?

An auto immune disorder of the small intestine that leads to symptoms such as sickness, diarrhea, bloated stomach and tiredness. 1 in every 100 people suffers from the disease.


What is Dermatitis Herpetiformis?

A skin inflammation caused by an intolerance to Gluten. It affects 1 in every 10,000 people and symptoms include: red raised patches, severe stinging itching of the skin.


What is a Gluten Free Diet?

The strict following of a diet involving the removal of harmful gluten containing ingredients, foods and beverages to prevent symptoms caused by Gluten sensitivity, Celiac and Deermatitis Herpetiformis diseases.


What are the obvious sources of Gluten?

Cereals, pastas, breads, flours, pizza bases, biscuits, cakes, sauces, soups and processed foods such as ready meals.


What happens if I eat Gluten by accident?

Starting to follow and learn about anything worth doing takes time and so part of the process is making the occasional mistake.

Gluten sensitivity varies in every individual and so some sufferers may not be aware of accidentally consuming a gluten containing product. It will however always cause gut damage that may take days, months or years to repair.

The important thing is that you learn from your mistakes and get right back on with a strict Gluten Free diet after the accident.


The next question is how does one start following a Gluten Free Diet to improve their health?

The first thing to do is to become generally aware of what ingredients contain gluten. To help you do so I have listed all the regular plants, grains, cereals, seeds and flours to avoid. There are quite a few ingredients to avoid, but donít worry, this list is relatively short compared to the amount of ingredients that can still be eaten; I will be educating you on starting an exciting and tasty Gluten Free diet later!


What About Oats Can I Or Canít I Eat Them?

Pure uncontaminated oats can be eaten by most people with gluten sensitivity as oats in their purest form do not contain gluten. The trouble lies in the supply of oats as many oats on the shelves of super markets today are contaminated with gluten because they are processed with wheat. If you can obtain a pure supply of oats then by all means try them, but I would recommend you consult a dietician first and have them to monitor your reaction.
